PIXMA MG8240 is located right at the top of its range, so it has all the extras that a company can throw. Premium quality printing and movie scanning at your fingertips.
It is said to model on the EOS range of digital cameras, the matt display of the printer is a significant improvement over the high-gloss model, fingerprint-prone in the range and we can only expect the new display filter to drop. The top of the scanner looks attractive dull until you turn on the machine when, not just the 88-mm LCD screen lights up in the center of the lid, but the illuminated touch button comes toward the face, and the indicator shines through its beautifully textured surrounding.
Under the lid is a folding front panel, which becomes an output tray, and beneath it is a 150 sheet paper cassette. There is a second 150 sheet paper tray that is lifted from the back of the machine so that you can load plain paper and photo paper together. The third printing source is for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray, which you get by pulling the guide into the printer and sliding it into the available disk tray.
The right of the front panel and flip-open cover provides access to three memory card slots, adding CompactFlash to SD and MemoryStick, which is a regular complement. Below is a USB / PictBridge socket, for instant printing from your camera. Another way to get images onto this printer is to remove the white reflector beneath the scanner lid and use the transparency adapter to scan in a slide or negative, at resolutions up to 4800 x 9.600ppi.
Other data connections include USB, 10/100 Ethernet, and wireless. Wireless connections are necessary because they provide access to a variety of direct printing technologies, including PIXMA Cloud Link, which uses Google Cloud Print, and AirPrint for iPad, iPhone, and other wireless Apple devices.
This machine uses six inks, with pigment-based black color and coloring as well as new gray inks to add to the CMY set, useful when printing black and white photos. They each clip to a semi-permanent head and the LED indicator shows when they last placed correctly and blinked when the ink is running low.
Canon claims a slightly higher speed for the PIXMA MG8240 compared to other machines in the range, at 12.5ppm for black and 9.3ppm for color. Print our black 5-page text appears at 8.3ppm, and 20-page document increases this to 9.9ppm, both of which are excellent results. Our black and color five-page text prints 4.6ppm and even our 20-sided duplex documents are managed 3.5 sides per minute, better than usual.
A one-page color copy takes photos of 22s and 15 x 10 cm which varies considerably between the scorching 32s and 53s which is very fair, depending on the quality setting. Even in standard configurations, the print quality is excellent, with sharp black text and very clean on plain paper and print concept modes are very useful, which is faster and save ink.
